I remember watching this soap when I was very young. I think that the soap, which was facing cancellation before introducing Barnabas Collins, made a brilliant move in opening up the gothic paranormal aspect of the show. Certainly this gave the program a new lease on life and it continued for several more years.
This was not the campy Munsters or the zany Addams Family but a semi-serious look at vampires, werewolves and other occultish creatures preying on unsuspecting or just terribly naive mortals. :)
