Goodbye and Good Luck
I watched the movie Goodbye and Good Luck last night. I really enjoyed it and glad that we watched the documentary
first. I
believe CBS really took a chance to go after Senator McCarthy and put their
jobs and life on the line as the station was, as I took it threatened by the military.
And in another since you may say the station
looked a little like the Fox network. When news do not like someone they go to any lengths to prove it to the
viewing public. Glad I watched it.

Outfoxed
I enjoyed this documentary and its commentary on how news channels choose political sides in their views. I have always hated to watch the CCNs and Fox News Channels of the TV world because they are so one sided. My dad is retired and has the TV running all day with these channels and it has always made me crazy when I am hanging out at the house. This was a great choice of shows to start the class out with!
You come a long way baby!!!!

Outfoxed
I watched Outfoxed last night and I have to say I remember during the war on Iraq was going on and how Fox was putting such a positive spin but on other networks you would still hear about many Americans loosing their life over there.
Another part I liked was the young man who Bill O'riely interviewed who's Dad died in 911. It was great how this person just put BIll up on the way and when they came back the man was going but Bill was just talking trash and twisting what he said. Crazy!
For the most part I am not surprised that the network is so skewed, Government has their hand in everything.

Outfoxed - enjoyed the documentary
I really enjoyed outfoxed! It feels good to be educated on what really goes on inside the new networks. I grew up watching the news with my parents every night at 6 PM. I am no longer a fan.
I watched the movie "Wag the Dog," for the first time and was amazed at some of the similar situations that we have encountered within the government from when the movie was actually filmed.
See everyone in class!

I've just been "Outfoxed."
In a recent Pew research study, all three of the major US
“News” networks were found to provide a high percentage of commentary/opinion
in their daily coverage. Factual news reporting has diminished over the years.
I can appreciate the documentary, Outfoxed, views on FOX News, but where was
their “fair and balanced” stance on this issue? In the Pew study, MSNBC
provided 85% commentary/opinion coverage. I feel the media, as a whole, is out
of control.
Ideally, I would love to have a news media outlet that was
unbiased and did not “spin” the arguments. But, who would provide such a
channel? Americans continue to watch these types of for profit news programs, therefore perpetuating the problem.
Alternatively, leaving the government to regulate the media (which
they cannot due to 1st Amendment’s Freedom of Press) would defiantly
not be any better. The government is not allowed to “prior restraint” the press
under the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Near V. Minnesota.
We are left to either watch or not watch. Complain or take action.

I am loving this new show!
I was always a fan of Psycho, so when A and E premiered Bates Motel last week, I was all about watching it!! It is supposedly the prequel to Psycho. How Norman Bates became psycho. Anyway, it held my attention and I am looking forward to watching the new season unfold.
They have the first two episodes online - http://www.aetv.com/bates-motel/

I went to see the movie
I went to see the movie and saw The Call staring Holly Berry. It was great and very suspenseful. Anyone that likes a movie that keeps you
on the edge of your seat The Call would do it.
I really enjoyed the movie and would see it again. I saw a preview of a movie called City Bones
it was a horror movie and I thought it might be the one Professor Tom was
talking about. When I got home I saw the
name of the movies were not the same.
I remember when I was little watching shows like I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, and I Love Lucy. Those were my moms favorite shows and still are! Here is a part of one of my favorite episodes of I Love Lucy, enjoy! http://youtu.be/A3w4ps14_IU
Men in Tv
I just watched the first part of TV in American Life. I can remember watching Archie Bunker with my parents. I thought it was very funny. I can remember watching the Cosby show too. I loved it as well. I am still trying to figure out how to post you tube videos on here. Have not had a whole lot of success but will keep trying. See you in class on Wednesday. So you get pics instead...LOL

Outfoxed
I watched Outfoxed Thursday night. I found it to be very interesting. Although I believe it can relate to most news station I do believe Fox is the biggest news station and is very opinionated. I will watch it again. Any other comments?

VAMPIRA
Early television had a great tradition of Horror Hosts, ghouls and other creatures of the night, who introduced Saturday evening horror movies. Vampira (Los Angeles model and actress Maila Nurmi) was one of the earliest and one of the best. She patterned her persona after Morticia, a creation of cartoonist Charles Addams whose characters would inspire the later "Addams Family" TV show of the 1960s and the movies of the 90s. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, another Horror Hostess, based her act on Vampira.
I missed the first class, but I am looking forward to the interesting discussion this coming week.
Most Memorable TV event
I remember being glued to the TV during the tragic events of 9/11. I don't know how many times I saw the same scene over and over again and was shocked and saddened each and every time!
When Professor Tom talked about special bulletins I remember when I was a kid when the TV flashed "Special Bulletin" everyone ran to the TV and knew that a war began, ended, President was shot, or died. There was no TV interruptions for sports figures signing on or off a team. Today if someone breaks a toe nail it seems it makes headlines. Does anyone remember when TV went off around 2am and you would get a circle with buzzing noise?
Good Morning Eckerd Pel...
Good morning everyone! Just thought i would see if i could post something using a link. I hope it works. Hope all of you have a great weekend. See you all on Wednesday. Live long and prosper.

Recommendations from the first night
I really enjoyed the first night of class, especially listening to everyone talking about their favorite shows. I didn't think to take notes on that part and now I'm regretting it. Would anyone like to respond to this post with their favorite programs so that we have a list?
We were limited to one show last night for time constraints but there more flexibility here on the blog. How about listing your current favorite and maybe some shows you loved in the past?
Current favorite(s) of mine:
Once Upon A Time: Sunday 8pm, ABC, currently in season 2. I am not certain that this will still be my favorite for much longer.
Grimm: Friday 8pm, NBC, currently season 2. This show has had some challenges but they seem to be coming back stong after a shaky first half of this season.
Older shows:
Dead Like Me, a Showtime original series, was probably my last real must see show. I grew up in the era of Fantasy Island and big 80s dramas but I loved the science fiction and fantasy stuff more. Buck Rogers, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999, Doctor Who, and shows like these. I've been surprised that some of these franchises are either still active or being resurrected.
Anyone else?

Blogging
Is anyone else having a issue with posting comments on the blog site? When I enter text on the text box it just goes into cyber space. I would say it might be gremlins but I really think it is me not knowing what I am doing. If anyone can explain it to me I would really appreciate it.

Anyone remember "captain Kangaroo"
I remember for a very short time as a very little kid watching the Captain Kangaroo Show. I found a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aa1nCG-5tg which has episode from 1976. It seems like the equivalent today would be Blues Clues or Disney Play house.

medium of the past century. We will

and development along with its social, cultural and political influences. Also covered will be how the basic concept of
television is changing and adapting to the ever-expanding areas of the
Internet, hand-held device technology and social networking. Students will explore the positive and
negative influences of television in all aspects of our national way of

Netflix – A
monthly subscription is a good idea for the class. All assigned viewings are “streamable” on Netflix. It costs $9 per month and the first month is
usually free. You can obtain many of the
titles at the library, but availability might be a problem with a limited
number of copies on hand. You can rent
or buy, but Netflix is easily the most convenient and affordable method. If you subscribe, for an extra $7 you can
receive the titles by mail as well as streaming. Turnaround is about 2-3 days.
Course Requirements and Grading:
·
Attendance & Participation 20% of grade
·
Quiz & Exam 30%

Attendance & Participation –
Every class covers a component of film history, theory and criticism vital to
your overall understanding of the subject.
If you can’t avoid missing a class, let me know in advance. Any pattern of absence or chronic lateness
will be noted and will adversely impact your final grade. Speak up in class. If that is difficult for you, bring in
something that will inspire discussion.
The Blog is a component of participation. Contributing to it will generate interest in
the class and good grades for you.
Quizzes – There will be at least
one quiz given during the course. It/they
will be at random and will cover the home viewing assignments. The questions will be general and not
analytical. They are designed to
determine if you have watched the assignment.
There will be no make-ups.
Final Exam – You are responsible
for the information presented in class, the content of the assigned readings,
and being familiar with class and required outside viewings. The exam will be a combination of objective
and short answer questions.
Blog Postings – You will be invited to participate in the
class blog. Postings and comments all
work in your favor.
Research Paper – A 3-5 page
paper on a topic of your choice dealing with class subject matter is due on the
final day of class. Be sure to get my
approval of your selection by the 4th week of class.
Academic Integrity – If you use
